Coast Guard rescues diver missing off Lanai

by LUTHER MONROE @ CDNN - CYBER DIVER News Network

LANAI, Hawaii (27 Jan 2009) — The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a diver off Lanai who said he did not need help.

Bruno Amby, 51, was diving with friends off a small Boston Whaler boat about four nautical miles off the southwest tip of Lanai.

Amby's friends called for help after the boat's engine failed and the other divers lost sight of their companion.

At about 9:45am, the Coast Guard scrambled a HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Barbers Point on Oahu and a 47-foot lifeboat and 25-foot boat from Station Maui in Maalaea.

About two hours later, the helicopter crew spotted Amby swimming just off the coast of Lanai, hoisted him aboard and took him to Manele Bay were he was reported in good condition.

Amby said he did not know his friends had a problem with the boat and was surprised to see the Coast Guard helicopter.

"I was wondering, 'What's going on?' " he said. "I was spearing fish..I was pretty safe."
