BIG ISLAND, Hawaii (27 Jan 2009) — A man died after a diving accident off the coast of North Kohala.
Michael Morris, 23, of Kamuela was free diving with friends at Lapakahi State Historical Park when he disappeared.
Big Island police said the other divers found Morris at a depth of about 25 meters but could not pull him up to the surface.
Fire rescue divers responded to a call for help at about 2:50pm and pulled the victim to the surface and started CPR.
Morris never recovered consciousness and was pronounced dead at Kawaihae Harbor.
Fatal free diving accidents are often the result of shallow water blackout.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
