Diving accident kills Kauai tourist

by LUTHER MONROE @ CDNN - CYBER DIVER News Network

PO'IPU, Kauai (4 Feb 2009) — A tourist from California died after a diving accident in Kauai.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the 50-year-old victim but told CDNN he was diving off the Waiohai Beach Club at the Marriott when he encountered problems.

Lifeguards at Po'ipu tower told police at about 2:00am they spotted the struggling diver about 800 yards away.

They rescued the man from the ocean with a paddle board and started CPR on the beach.

A fire rescue team from Koloa station arrived soon after and took over CPR as they rushed the man to hospital.

Officials at Wilcox Memorial Hospital said the man never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at the medical facility.

The accident is under investigation and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
