LOS BANOS, California (21 Feb 2009) — A California widow of a diver who died after a scuba diving accident at Dos Amigos pumping plant has filed suit against the Bureau of Reclamation.
Sara Alvarado's lawsuit accuses the federal agency of failing to comply with safety standards in the deaths of her husband, Martin Alvarado, and Tim Crawford.
In February 2007, both divers entered the canal at the Dos Amigos Pumping Plant for a planned 30-minute routine maintenance dive to clear debris from the pump.
An hour later, when the two men had still not resurfaced, plant employees finally called 911 for help.
It was too late. Fast moving water sucked both divers into a grate and they were unable to free themselves.
Bureau officials declined to comment on the lawsuit.
