LANGLEY MILL, UK (6 Apr 2009) — A woman whose husband died while snorkeling in Barbados has spoken of her anguish. Brenda Knighton, 64, has told how husband Brian, 66, died on Valentines day while snorkeling at one of their favourite holiday destinations. She said they had been enjoying a lovely day together and had swam out to look at the fish. She said: "I looked up and Brian had taken his mask off and was fine. I was taking pictures and when I looked up again 30 seconds later he was dead - from me looking at him to looking at him again he had died - I knew he'd gone." Mrs Knighton of Chesnut Road, Langley Mill said she screamed when she realised what had happened. "I was screaming 'help me', 'help me' and was holding him. Some people then lifted him onto a dinghy and took him to the beach but it was too late." Mr Knighton, a former electrician who liked to keep fit, died from a massive heart attack. Paying tribute to him, Mrs Knighton, who met her husband on Heanor market place when she was 15, said: "We would have been together for 50 years this year. He was on a motorbike when we met and I'd had my eye on him. From then on we were together every day. | | She added: "He was a lovely man who was always smiling. He was happy, easy going and loved his family." The couple had three children, Darren, Dawn and Donna and seven great grandchildren. |
