California diver dies near Point Arena

by LUTHER MONROE @ CDNN - CYBER DIVER News Network

POINT ARENA, California (22 Apr 2009) — A man died while diving off a private beach near Point Arena in Mendocino County.

Authorities told CDNN the 63-year-old diving accident victim was diving for abalone when the fatal accident occurred.

The man's name has not yet been released but sheriff's officials said he was not a local resident.

Conditions were ideal for diving with flat calm seas.

The victim was the first abalone diver fatality in the area this year.

In 2008, eight people died who were diving in the area for abalone.
