BRISBANE, Australia (25 Apr 2009) — An inquest found that a doctor should have more thoroughly investigated the sleeping disorder of a scuba diving accident victim. Dr Stephen Broe, 45, died during a technical scuba diving course after a deep 50-meter dive off Moreton Island near Brisbane. Just after completing the dive, Dr. Broe complained of shortness of breath and burning pain in his chest, then fell unconscious and died a few minutes later from decompression sickness. Queensland coroner Michael Barnes said Dr Greg Emerson, who conducted the physical examination that cleared Dr. Broe to dive, should have thoroughly investigated the victim's sleeping disorder. The coroner did not recommend that Dr. Emerson be referred to the Medical Board, saying there was no evidence he was "lax or cavalier". He did, however, recommend a full review of dive medical guidelines and urged the self-regulated dive industry to review water exit procedures. |
