TORQUAY, UK (27 Apr 2009) — A BSAC diver died after a scuba diving accident at Breakwater Beach off the south Devon coast. Authorities told CDNN the 53-year-old male diver, whose name has not yet been released pending notification of kin, was diving with a group off Berry Head near Torquay. Witnesses said the victim resurfaced without difficulty but was found unconscious after he reentered the water to retrieve another diver's lost weight belt. A Coastguard rescue helicopter airlifted the victim to Derriford Hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 10:00 pm. Brixham Coastguard officials issued a warning advising divers not to go back into the water to recover lost equipment. Police are investigating the fatal scuba diving accident and have asked witnesses to contact them on 0845 777444 quoting log number 246/ of April 26. Authorities said the Plymouth coroner will open an inquest into the diver's death later this week. The Health and Safety Executive are also assisting in the investigation. |
