SANTA ROSA, California (28 Apr 2009) — A San Francisco man is in intensive care after a diving accident off the north coast of California. Authorities told CDNN that Moon Choi, 61, collapsed in the Fort Ross Terrace parking area after diving for abalone near Fort Ross reef. A Fish and Game warden and bystanders immediately started CPR and called for help. State and County Park rangers, a Sheriff's Deputy and Timber Cove Fire volunteers also assisted with the injured diver emergency. The "Henry 1" Sonoma County Sheriff's helicopter was scrambled but five minutes later received a missing diver alert. Pilot Paul Bradley and Sgt. Eric Thomson dropped paramedic Dmitri Menzel at the parking area to treat Choi and immediately took off to search for the missing diver. Minutes later, a Reach medical helicopter was scrambled and airlifted Choi to Sutter Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition. Meanwhile, the Sheriff's helicopter spotted the missing diver, Nathan Ng, 48, who was actually rock picking abalone and had no diving equipment when he got caught by the incoming tide. Suspended from the Henry 1 on a 30-meter line, Sgt. Thomson placed Ng in a rescue harness and both men were lifted from the reef to safety. |
