Rapid ascent likely killed diver

by LUTHER MONROE @ CDNN - CYBER DIVER News Network

GALVESTON, Texas (8 May 2009) — A diver who was working on an underwater pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico died.

U.S. Coast Guard officials told CDNN that Christopher Wilson, 38, of Pass Christian, Mississippi, died after he apparently ascended too rapidly from a depth of about 62.5 meters (205 feet).

Investigators said the sudden ascent was apparently caused by an equipment malfunction.

An air bag designed to keep 7,000 pound pipes buoyant suddenly rose pulling Wilson from the seabed to a depth of about 22 meters.

Wilson was employed by Veolia, a Scandinavian company that specializes in hydroblasting.

Coast Guard officials said the fatal diving accident is still under investigation.
