BREMERTON, Washington (9 May 2009) — A diving accident killed a U.S. Navy diver who was training in Puget Sound when he died.
Navy officials told CDNN that Eric F. Shellenberger, 36, a special warfare operator, died on May 7 while training off Bremerton.
The Navy has not yet released details about the accident but said Shellenberger encountered problems at depth, signaled for an emergency ascent but was unconscious when he reached the surface.
Diver support personnel rushed the victim to shore where he was transferred to a nearby hospital, but he never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at the medical facility.
Navy officials said Shellenberger was a member of the SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV) Team One at Pearl City, Hawaii and is survived by his fiancee.
