DELTA, Pennsylvania (9 May 2009) — Police are investigating a scuba diving accident that killed a diver at Guppy Gulch quarry. Authorities have not yet released the name of the scuba diving accident victim but told CDNN the ill-fated diver was a 56-year-old male who resides in Sykesville, Maryland. State police Trooper Christopher Colarusso said other divers pulled the victim out of the water after he encountered problems at depth, called for help and started CPR. Paramedics responded to the emergency at 12:10 pm and took over CPR at the scene of the accident. The victim never regained consciousness, however, and was pronounced dead at 12:57 pm. Witnesses said a man who may have been the owner of Guppy Gulch told reporters to leave the property. Reporters also tried to telephone personnel at (717) 456-7535 but there was no answer. Police said York County Deputy Coroner Claude Stabley will perform a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. In July 1995, the same year the quarry opened for business, Ruth Elaine Parry, a 43-year-old Baltimore woman, died while taking a scuba diving course at Guppy Gulch. The scuba diving park is owned by Baltimore dive store owner Steve Deem who dumped old cars and boats in the quarry to make it more interesting for scuba divers. |
