Divers Institute of Technology scuba diving accident victim identified

SEATTLE, Washington (9 May 2009) — Authorities have released the name of the Seattle diver who was hospitalized in critical condition after a scuba diving accident in Elliott Bay.

David Holt, a student at Divers Institute of Technology, disappeared during a training dive with the company.

According to a statement issued by Divers Institute of Technology, staff instructors started searching for Holt after he went missing and found him unconscious at a depth of about 12 meters (40 feet).

The instructors pulled Holt to the surface and brought him to shore where they started CPR.

Paramedics called to the scene of the accident took Holt to Harborview Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

In its statement, Divers Institute of Technology said the accident was the first serious one since the company started commercial diving instruction 41 years ago.

The near-fatal diving accident is under investigation by the Seattle Police Department and several government agencies.

Divers Institute of Technology said it is also conducting a thorough internal investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
