HONOLULU, Hawaii (13 May 2009) — A man died while diving near Portlock Point off the island of Oahu.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the diving accident victim but told CDNN the diver was a Honolulu resident in his mid-20s.
Witnesses said the victim was spotted floating unconscious in the ocean by a local resident who pulled the man out of the water onto a rocky ledge with the help of other bystanders.
They started CPR and called for help at about 2:10 pm.
Fire-rescue paramedics took over when they arrived about 10 minutes later and pulled the victim up to the top of the cliff near Poipu Drive where an ambulance was standing by.
The man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities said the victim had been diving with friends but lost contact with the other divers after entering the ocean.
Local divers familiar with the area said entry and exit can be extremely dangerous due to the rocky coastline and waves that can slam divers against the rocks.
