Diving accident kills Tobago tourist

by LUTHER MONROE @ CDNN - CYBER DIVER News Network

SPEYSIDE, Tobago (13 May 2009) — A tour boat captain found one of his customers floating face down in the water off Speyside when he returned to pick up the divers.

Authorities told CDNN the diving accident victim was Andreas Kirstein, 51, a German national on holiday in Tobago.

Police said the dive boat captain dropped Kirstein and another tourist at a dive site and left the area to drop a third diver at another dive site.

When he returned to the first dive site he found Kirstein floating unconscious in the water.

The dive boat captain took the victim ashore where he was pronounced dead by County Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) Dr Mentor Melville.

Authorities declined to comment on whether the boat was equipped with emergency medical equipment and whether the captain attempted to revive Kirstein with CPR.

Police said the accident is under investigation and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of the death.
