GLOUCESTER, Massachusetts (18 May 2009) — A search has been launched for a scuba diver who disappeared south of Gloucester Harbor.
Coast Guard officials have not yet identified the scuba diving accident victim, but told CDNN they are searching for a 50-year-old male diver who disappeared near Eastern Point.
The victim was diving off a Boston-based dive boat near the wreck of the tanker Chester A. Poling with two other divers.
They called for help at about 4:00 pm after failing to find the victim who did not resurface according to the dive plan.
A U.S. Coast Guard Jayhawk rescue helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod, four Coast Guard vessels including a 25-foot rescue boat and a 47-foot lifeboat from Station Gloucester, the Beverly Dive Team and Massachusetts State Police divers are assisting in the search for the missing scuba diver.
As of 5:00 pm today, the victim had not been seen above the surface for for two hours and 45 minutes.
