TUPELO, Mississippi (22 May 2009) — A member of the Itawamba County Dive Team died while searching for a missing teenager. Authorities told CDNN that David Sheffield, 44, of Tupelo, was rushed to Pioneer Community Hospital in Aberdeen after complaining about breathing problems while searching in the Buttahatchie River for missing Smithville teen, Taylor Smith, 15. "Mr. Sheffield and other members of the team had been in the water between one and two hours," said Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley. "According to a witness I spoke with, Sheffield came to the surface and said he could not breathe." After Sheffield lost consciousness, other divers administered CPR until paramedics arrived and rushed the scuba diving accident victim to hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 1:15 pm. Police said an autopsy was performed at the Mississippi Crime Lab in Jackson, however, the results have not yet been released to the public. |
