CIRKEWWA, Malta (28 May 2009) — A British tourist died in hospital after she was critically injured while scuba diving with her son in Malta.
Authorities declined to identify the fatally injured diver, but told CDNN the victim was a 53-year-old woman who booked a scuba diving trip during her holiday in Malta.
Officials of the Police Community and Media Relations Unit said the woman apparently got the bends while scuba diving in Cirkewwa but declined to release details about the scuba diving accident.
She was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital but died two days later.
Police said autopsy results indicate the woman died due to "pulmonary haemorrhage and brain necrosis (stemming from) decompression sickness".
