ORANGE CITY, Florida (30 May 2009) — A man is dead after a diving accident this morning at Blue Spring State Park. Authorities told CDNN that Robert A. Jones, 38, of Zephyrhills, died while solo free diving. The diver death will also be recorded as a cave diving fatality even though the victim was not using scuba equipment. According to statistics from the National Speleological Society, it was the first cave diving fatality at Blue Spring since 1994 when the organization started to monitor fatal cave diving accidents. According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, other divers found Jones at about 10:20 am face down at a depth of about three meters. Rescuers from EVAC, the Orange City Fire Department, park rangers and other divers all assisted in the effort to rescue the victim. EVAC spokesman, Mark O'Keefe, described the rescue effort as a "complex, advanced life support rescue because the diver was in the area of the boil". O'Keefe said the victim was taken to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial but never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at the medical facility at 11:33 am. Cave Diving Fatalities 1994-2009 (to date) The National Speleological Society acknowledges that the following records, which represent the minimum number of cave diving fatalities, are incomplete. Some 69 deaths have been reported since 1994. Since 2005, there have been 10 cave diving fatalities, all in Florida.
