Injured Florida scuba diver airlifted to hospital

June 8, 2009

TAMPA, Florida — A Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater rescued a scuba diver suffering from potentially fatal decompression sickness (the bends).

Authorities told CDNN that Bill Nelson, 55, was taken to Shands Hospital for emergency medical treatment in a hyperbaric chamber.

Nelson was diving off a commercial dive boat about 60 miles west of John's Pass when he resurfaced and fell ill.

At about 2:00 pm, the dive boat crew called Coast Guard Sector Mobile's command center in Mobile, Alabama to report the scuba diving accident.

The Coast Guard scrambled a helicopter and reached the dive boat at about 4:00 pm.

After hoisting Nelson aboard, they took him to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.

Officials have not yet released information about Nelson's condition.
