SEATTLE, Washington — The parents of a young woman who died scuba diving filed a lawsuit against Craig Gillespie, a dive shop franchiser who owns Seattle Scuba School. Kevin Coyne and Julie Simonds filed suit in King County Superior Court claiming their daughter's death was caused by Gillespie's negligence. Jennifer Coyne, 25, died in July 2007 while scuba diving on a Seattle Scuba School trip to Lummi Rocks near Bellingham. She was a novice diver who learned to scuba dive with Seattle Scuba School just two months before her tragic death. According to the lawsuit, Gillespie failed to properly maintain the rental scuba diving equipment Coyne was using when she died, and failed to take adequate safety precautions by pairing her with another novice diver. CDNN reported that Coyne encountered problems at a depth of about 18 meters and lost consciounsess. Her buddy was unable to provide rescue assistance but eventually Gillespie pulled her up to the surface. According to witnesses, her lungs were full of water when Gillespie and others started CPR on the Deep Sea dive charter boat. The Coast Guard responded to a call for help from the Deep Sea captain and rushed Coyne to shore where she was transferred to EMS and taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham. She died three days later. Seattle Scuba School owner and Scuba Schools Group dive shop franchiser, Craig Gillespie, is being sued in King County Superior Court for negligence that allegedly led to the death of Jennifer Coyne. |
