PORTLAND, UK — A boy was severely injured while learning to scuba dive off the coast of Portland. Authorities told CDNN that 12-year-old Dominic Harvey, of Leigh, was airlifted to Poole Hospital for treatment of potentially fatal decompression sickness. Witnesses said the boy complained of a headache and was having trouble breathing after ascending too rapidly from a depth of about four meters. The dive instructor pulled Dominic to shore and started to administer oxygen. The Coastguard responded to a call for help and scrambled a helicopter that airlifted the scuba diving accident victim to Poole Hospital at about 3:30 pm. Hospital officials said the boy spent eight hours in a hyperbaric chamber followed by a second 90-minute session the next day. Alan Harvey, the boy's father, and Adam Harvey, the boy's 14-year-old brother were also scuba diving with Dominic when he was injured. They said he panicked and shot to the surface when he had trouble clearing his diving mask, a skill that student divers are required to master during entry-level scuba diving courses. Authorities said the boy is expected to fully recover from his injuries. |
