BRIGHTON, UK — The Coastguard has called off the search for a diver who disappeared while scuba diving off the Channel Diver dive boat. Search and rescue officials told CDNN there is no hope of finding the missing diver alive. Authorities declined to identify the missing diver, but said the victim was a man in his 60s who was scuba diving with a rebreather. The scuba diving accident victim was diving with three other divers at the wreck of the Empire Javelin, an infantry landing ship that sank in the December 1944 D-Day landings and after it was hit by a torpedo. According to unconfirmed reports, the victim separated from his buddy and disappeared as the pair ascended from the 60-meter deep wreck. British and French helicopters, aircraft and patrol vessels assisted in the missing diver search, which was coordinated by the Regional Operation Search and Rescue Centre in Joburg, northern France. As part of a police investigation of the fatal scuba diving accident, the owner of the Channel Diver dive boat was questioned as well as other divers who were diving with the victim. |
