LULWORTH COVE, UK — The range safety craft Smit Frome found a man about three hours after he disappeared while diving in the Lulworth Cove area. Authorities told CDNN the successful search and rescue operation was coordinated by the Portland Coastguard. Witnesses said the 41-year-old diver was scallop diving when he apparently got caught in a current. A boat crew notified the range safety craft of the missing diver emergency at about 1:30 pm. After they contacted Portland Coastguard for additional help, three Coastguard Rescue teams from Wyke, Lulworth and St Albans were tasked to search the shoreline, Portland Coastguard Rescue helicopter was scrambled and the Weymouth inshore and all weather RNLI lifeboats were requested to launch. The warship Middleton offered to assist with its two seaboats and the range safety craft Smit Frome also joined the search. Portland Coastguard Rescue Coordination Centre Manager, Mark Rodaway, said the missing diver was found at about 3:15 pm. "I am very pleased to report that the range safety craft Smit Frome found the missing diver at 3.15 pm," Rodaway said. "He was difficult to locate because he was not carrying a surface detection aid, however, he is safe and well and the fact that he was wearing a drysuit increased his survivability." "We would always recommend that clear plans are made for dive trips and that dive boats know exactly how they will proceed should they lose a diver," Rodaway added. "This should be the case for all diving trips, whether diving for scallops or diving recreationally." |
