JUPITER, Florida — Danielle Dyer Manna calls her wedding to Michael Manna on July 11 "the happiest day of our lives. He was never happier." Five days later, she was a widow. Manna, an electrical inspector for Palm Beach County, died Thursday while snorkeling at DuBois Park near Jupiter. An off-duty nurse from a Broward County trauma center who was also swimming found Manna floating in the back of the park's lagoon, in an area lifeguards don't patrol. Manna was taken by ambulance to Jupiter Medical Center, where he died. His wife is awaiting a finding from the medical examiner on whether he drowned or had some other medical problem. A Palm Beach Post photographer's random shot on Father's Day, June 21, shows the couple canoeing through lily pads at Grassy Waters Nature Preserve's Father's Day Wetland Frolic. "That was such happy day. We were so excited because we were just a month away from getting married," Danielle said today. Manna had worked since 2001 for the county's Department of Planning, Zoning and Building. "He was well-liked by his co-workers. He was admired by many people," Bob Karrh, the county's chief electrical inspector, said today. "He strived to do the right thing. I wish I had more like Michael. Karrh said Manna was a changed man after he met Danielle. "It was like night and day. You could see the man was very happy to be with his wife and their children," Karrh said. The couple had met about four years ago while walking dogs, and exchanged vows July 11 at a resort on Singer Island, according to his widow, who works in customer service at a janitorial supply company. They'd returned Tuesday from their honeymoon and had gone to the park with Danielle's two children, Emma, 14, and Maddy, 11. He had bought them snorkels the previous evening. "He loved my children like they were his own. There are very few men like that in the world," she sobbed. She said she and her husband were "very outdoorsy" and spent a lot of time snorkeling at DuBois Park. Danielle wrote on her Facebook page, "I told the girls that we have to stay together for safety and they stuck close by me the whole time. We found a hermit crab and were watching him walk underwater (very cool looking) and when we came up, I asked where Mike was. We started looking and when we turned around, a woman screamed 'oh my God, there's a man' and she dragged him out onto the sand and started chest compressions. When I saw the swimsuit the man was wearing, I knew it was Mike." Danielle wrote that the nurse directed her to do mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. "There were a bunch of people standing there gawking. I told them if they had to stare, they should pray at the same time, because we needed it," she wrote. Danielle wrote that the two talked about adopting a child and finding a house to buy and fix up, "and how he was so happy and never knew he could be that happy." And, she wrote, "We left nothing unspoken. We both knew that we found the piece that was missing from our lives when we found each other." Funeral arrangements are pending, Danielle said. She said her husband also is survived by his grandmother, parents, a sister, a brother, and nieces and nephews. by ELIOT KLEINBERG | | Michael Manna and Danielle Dyer, both of West Palm Beach.
