NORTH KINGSTOWN, Rhode Island — A man died while diving off Quonset Point. Authorities told CDNN that Louis Ricciarelli, 56, of Exeter, Rhode Island, was found dead still attached to his air hose and tethered to the Chelsea Ann, the 25-ft commercial dive boat from which he made his living. Officials believe Ricciarelli was diving for quahogs, a type of clam, when he died. Rhode Island State Police received a call from Ricciarelli's wife, Deborah, at about 2:15 am on Tuesday reporting that her husband had not returned home after leaving Allen Harbor in the Chelsea Ann. Police notified the Coast Guard of an overdue boat and Coast Guard Station Castle Hill launched a 25-foot response vessel at 4:44 am to search for Ricciarelli. Coast Guard searchers found the Chelsea Ann about six miles from the station and called in Warwick Fire Department divers after they noticed a dive hose leading from the boat into the water. At about 6:40 am, divers recovered the victim's body from a depth of about 20 feet. The diving accident is under investigation by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management Police. |
