GILI TRAWANGAN, Lombok, Indonesia — An Australian tourist disappeared while diving off Gili Trawangan, Lombok. Authorities told CDNN that Matthew Hamblin, 25, was snorkel diving alone off the dive resort where he was staying when he went missing. Indonesian search and rescue chief Budisma said local residents saw Hamblin diving before he disappeared at about 10:00 am. "The people in the area said they had seen a man surfacing from the waters a few times," he said. Hamblin's girlfriend said he had been diving in the same area the day before and was familiar with the area. But search officials said there were big waves and that strong currents and undertows are common in the area where Hamblin was diving. Budisma indicated that the search and rescue missing has turned into a recovery effort. "We sent out two rescue boats and 22 personnel to look for him since Thursday but we couldn't find him. It's been a few days... the waves are big, we fear he might not survive," he said. "He shouldn't have snorkelled alone. The people in the area said they had seen a man surfacing from the waters a few times. After that he disappeared," he added. |
