GILI TRAWANGAN, Lombok, Indonesia — The family of a 25-year-old Western Australian man missing since Wednesday is in mourning after his body was found yesterday off the coast of Indonesia. Matthew Peter Hamblin was last seen before he went snorkelling on his own from Gili Trawangan island, north-west of Lombok. When he did not return, his girlfriend and a friend hired a boat to look for him and Indonesian authorities launched a search. His mother, Deb Hamblin, flew to the island to help look for him and had just returned home to Rockingham when authorities notified the family his body had been found. Mrs Hamblin is a Rockingham city councillor and the mayor, Barry Sammels, says the family and the community are devastated. "Unfortunately, they've found Matthew's body not far from where he went missing around the point, not far from Gili island," he said. "This has absolutely turned into an absolute tragedy." Mr Hamblin was described as an experienced diver and swimmer, but locals say the area is known for its strong currents. Mr Sammels said Mr Hamblin loved the ocean. "A strong swimmer, very experienced scuba diver, a fisherman and it's just a really unfortunate situation that's happened because he was such an experienced person," he said. Mr Sammels says the family had thanked those involved in the search, saying authorities did all they could to assist. "The Government have been fantastic in assisting them and have been involved with the search, right the way through," he said. |
