FILEY, UK — A scuba diving accident killed two recreational scuba divers off the coast of Filey. Authorities told CDNN that decompression sickness (the bends) killed Stephen John Bailey, 49, of Filey, and Malcolm Exley, 52, of Scarborough. Both men were experienced divers and members of the Filey Brigg Sub Aqua Club. Witnesses said the two scuba diving accident victims were diving with two other divers off On A Promise, a small dive boat owned by Chris Baker, when they apparently ascended too rapidly from a wreck. Police said the other two divers, who were not injured, called the Coastguard for help at about 1:25 pm. Rescue officials scrambled an RAF helicopter that airlifted the pair to Hull Royal Infirmary where they were pronounced dead. Police are investigating the accident to determine how two experienced scuba divers died. "Police are carrying out preliminary investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths," said a spokesman for the North Yorkshire police. The Filey Brigg Sub Aqua Club has located and mapped the sites of many of the wrecks near Filey, a popular UK wreck diving destination. |
