SUMMERLAND KEY, Florida — A scuba diving accident killed another young man as he hunted for lobsters in the Florida Keys. Authorities told CDNN that Courtney Spikes, 32, of Trinity, died about noon today in a canal behind a private residence on Caribbean Drive on Summerland Key. Witnesses said that about five minutes after he entered the water, he resurfaced and screamed, "Help, I'm drowning." Spikes' wife, who was watching from shore, jumped in but could not find her husband in the murky water. Two men diving nearby finally found the scuba diving accident victim about 11 minutes after he called for help. Spikes was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island, where he was pronounced dead. Dead Florida lobster diver #7 Spikes was the seventh person to die during Florida's annual lobster season, which kicked off with last week's 2-day "mini-season". Although the U.S. Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials and local television and newspaper media continue to state that four people died during the annual mini-season event, in fact, five divers died including Norman Williams, 60, Bruce Ellwood Cook, 58, Scott Schichtel, 39, Shane Slusarz, 36, and Daniel Pochedley, 48. CDNN has not been able to determine why Florida officials continue to erroneously undercount the number of diving fatalities that occurred during the 2009 lobster mini-season.
