BRADENTON BEACH, Florida — A man is in hospital after he was injured while scuba diving in Florida. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the scuba diving accident victim, but said a 29-year-old man suffering potentially fatal decompression sickness (the bends) was airlifted to hospital by the U.S. Coast Guard. U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Simpson said the diver apparently encountered problems at depth while scuba diving at a site about 15 minutes west of Longboat Pass. The Coast Guard scrambled a helicopter and the Longboat Key Police Department launched a rescue boat after receiving a call for help at about 1:30 pm. The boat took the injured diver to Coquina Beach where he was transferred to a helicopter that took him to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. Hospital officials have not yet released information about the man's condition.
