MARSA ALAM, Egypt — Four scuba diving tourists have been rescued after they were swept away yesterday in strong currents near Marsa Alam. Authorities told CDNN the missing scuba divers, all Russians, were diving near a pair of islands in the Red Sea called al-Akhawein, or the Brothers when they disappeared. A search was launched for the missing divers but was suspended at nightfall on Monday. Today, as the search resumed, one of the divers, Vitaly Ivanov, turned up at a village in Al-Quseir, north of Marsa Alam after swimming some 20 kilometers back to shore. The other three divers who were rescued at sea had been swimming with Ivanov, but he became separated from the group overnight. Two other divers who started the dive with the group resurfaced and were picked up immediately by the dive boat. CDNN previously reported about fatal scuba diving accidents in 2007 that killed at least seven Russian tourists died while scuba diving in the Red Sea. |
