COUNTY CORK, Ireland — A scuba diver is in hospital today after suffering chemical burns to 30 percent of his body. Authorities said the victim was exploring the wreck of the Lusitania off the Old Head of Kinsale when a heat pad he was using ruptured. The Valentia Coast Guard said the accident happened about 20 minutes after the diver descended to a depth of about 90 meters (295 ft). Despite painful burns, the diver managed to make a controlled ascent, thus avoiding potentially fatal decompression sickness. The dive boat crew called for help at about 2:20 pm and the Coastguard scrambled a helicopter that airlifted the victim to Cork airport. Rescuers then transferred the injured diver to an ambulance that rushed him to Cork University Hospital. Hospital officials said the victim is in stable condition. On May 7, 1915, a German submarine torpedoed the Lusitania, which sank some 12 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale with the loss of more than 1,100 lives. |
