SAN DIEGO, California — An Arizona police officer on holiday in California with his family died while scuba diving with Dive Connections.
Authorities told CDNN that Daniel Forchione, 46, disappeared at about 12:30 pm while diving off the D&D II dive boat.
Witnesses said Forchione ran out of air, panicked, bolted to the surface, removed his buoyancy vest (BCD) and air tank but failed to ditch his weight belt and disappeared beneath the ocean's surface.
The Dive Connections boat crew alerted authorities of a missing diver emergency and rescuers raced to the scene of the accident.
About an hour later, Forchione's body was recovered near the dive boat off Sunset Cliffs from a depth of about 20 meters.
