HONOLULU, Hawaii — A 26-ft boat ran over and killed a teenager who was diving in Maunalua Bay.
Authorities told CDNN that Keahihoku Lum, 17, of Honolulu, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition and was later pronounced dead from lacerations to the chest and abdomen caused by the boat's propeller.
One of two friends diving with Lum was also injured and taken to hospital where he is listed in good condition.
Witnesses said the divers were about 100 or 200 yards offshore near China Walls spearfishing at a depth of about 20 feet and all deployed required dive flags.
According to Hawaii state law, boats must slow to no-wake speed within 200 feet of dive flags and stay 100 feet away from diver down markers.
Police, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Coast Guard are investigating the fatal accident and criminal charges are possible.
