Scuba diving accident near Port Hardy kills American

PORT HARDY, Canada — A man died while scuba diving off Nigei Island northeast of Port Hardy.

Authorities told CDNN that Andrew James Letourneau, 46, of Colter, Oregon, was fatally injured while scuba diving with five friends.

The Canadian Coast Guard responded to a call for help from the other divers at about 7:00 pm on Wednesday.

According to Cpl. Darren A. Lagan of Island District RCMP, Latourneau was pronounced dead at the scene of the scuba diving accident.

The accident is under investigation and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.
