KEY WEST, Florida — A Florida man drowned while scuba diving at Boca Chica Channel. Authorities told CDNN that searchers recovered the body of Edward Brown, 44, of Miriam Street, at about 11 a.m. but attempts to revive the diving accident victim failed. According to dive buddy, Francis Wright Jr. of La Brisa Lane on Cudjoe Key, Brown died trying to rescue him. After the pair resurfaced, Wright slipped and suffered a head injury as he tried to climb back aboard the boat. Swallowing water and unable to hold on to the boat, Wright started to drift off in the strong current. Seeing that his buddy was in trouble, Brown, who was also at the surface near the bow of the boat, left the vessel to rescue Wright. Meanwhile, a kayaker spotted the distressed divers but he could only assist one diver at a time and as he pulled Wright to safety, Brown disappeared beneath the ocean's surface apparently unable to ditch his weight belt. Authorities said the accident is under investigation. |
