DEERFIELD, Illinois — Police detectives are investigating a fatal scuba diving accident that killed one man and injured another. Authorities told CDNN that Michael Johnson, 45, of Fountain, Colorado, was pronounced dead at 3:23 p.m. after he was airlifted by Flight for Life helicopter to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. A second diver, who has not been identified, was rushed to Highland Park Hospital suffering from hypothermia. Employed by U.S. Aqua Vac, Inc., the divers were working under contract to Baxter HealthCare Corp to clean ponds on the company's property. According to Battalion Chief Jim Philip, the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District responded at 1:15 p.m. to a call for a "diver who ran out of air". When rescuers arrived, they found two divers in trouble including Johnson's co-worker who was trying to rescue the diving accident victim. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death. |
