WEEKI WACHEE, Florida — Volunteer divers recovered the body of a man who died while scuba diving in a Florida cave. Authorities told CDNN that James Woodall II, 39, of Richmond, Kentucky, drowned while diving at Eagle's Nest cave with Gregory Snowden, 34. Snowden said they were about 500 feet from the cave entrance at about 1:30 p.m. when Woodall apparently had problems with his scuba diving equipment and drowned despite Snowden's attempts to help. Snowden resurfaced at about 6:00 p.m. and called 911. Shortly after midnight, volunteer divers recovered Woodall's body in about 270 feet of water. According to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, both Woodall and Snowden were PADI certified divers who did their training at New Horizons Diving Center in Lexington, Kentucky. But neither diver had formal training in cave diving techniques. Woodall, who formally worked as an EMT and paramedic, is survived by his wife and two daughters. Six divers have died at Eagle's Nest since 1981 and several others have been severely injured. |
