Searchers recover body of paraplegic scuba diver missing off Sudan

by Luther Monroe @ CDNN - Cyber Diver News Network

November 6, 2009

SUDAN — Searchers have recovered the body of a missing Cypriot paraplegic diver.

On November 2, CDNN reported that 39-year-old Dimitris Matsas disappeared while exploring a shipwreck with other scuba divers off the coast of Sudan.

Matsas's buddy diver, Debbie Bagdhatis, said that when she signalled she was having problems equalizing her ears and had to ascend, he turned and followed the other divers deeper into the wreck rather than resurfacing with her.

According to standard safe diving protocol which requires buddy divers to remain together, Matsas should have ascended with Bagdhatis.
