A scuba diving accident killed Johnsie Hudspeth who was diving with Amy Slate's Amoray Dive Resort off the Amoray Diver dive boat, a 45-ft Corinthian catamaran that many divers refer to as a "cattle boat".

KEY LARGO, Florida — Just two days after a man died while scuba diving off Key West, a woman died off Key Largo while scuba diving with Amy Slate's Amoray Dive Resort.

Authorities told CDNN that Johnsie Hudspeth, 59, a realtor in Elkin, Florida, died after she encountered problems while diving off the Amoray Diver dive boat at Molasses Reef.

Witnesses said the crew of the Cheeca View dive boat spotted Hudspeth at the surface signalling for help.

They pulled her aboard, gave her oxygen and called for help as they headed back to shore.

Paramedics took over when the boat reached shore and rushed Hudspeth to Marine's Hospital where she later died.

The fatal scuba diving accident is under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Florida cattle boats

Hudspeth died while diving off the Amoray Diver, a large 45-ft Corinthian catamaran barge-style boat common among dive operators in the Florida Keys.

Often referred to as "cattle boats", Corinthian catamarans that operate in Florida are typically set up to carry 20 to 40 divers per trip.

Many divers believe that "cattle boats" compromise diver safety because dive operators cannot safely supervise so many divers in the water at the same time and cannot respond quickly enough when divers encounter problems.

Just over a year ago, two scuba divers died in separate accidents while diving in the Florida Keys off identical 45-ft catamaran dive boats.
