SUVA, Fiji (27 June 2000) -- According to a Fiji Ministry of Labor survey, 4,359 people have been layed off since the coup on May 19.

Most of the jobs were lost in the tourism and garment industries.

Occupancy rates in Fiji hotels have plummeted as travelers avoid a country that is lurching back into racism and violence.

The Fiji Tourist Bureau estimates that the industry is losing at least $1.3m per day.
