MALULU ISLANDS, Indonesia (27 June 2000) -- The president of Indonesia has imposed a state of emergency in Indonesia where clashes between Muslims and Chrisitians have killed over 2,500 people.

"The situation is out of control," President Abdurrahman Wahid said.

The state of emergency declaration empowers the military and police to censor the media, impose a travel ban and detain suspects indefinitely.
