MALULU ISLANDS, Indonesia (30 June 2000) -- Fighting between Muslims and Christians continues to claim lives and thousands are fleeing their homes to escape violence in the Maluku Islands.

The islands appear to be headed for martial law, however, there have been accusations of military involvement in the violence.

According to reports, pro-Indonesian militias have killed hundreds and former Indonesian military chief General Wiranto has been linked to the violence.

The government has issued a deadline for all weapons to be laid down by July 1, 2000.
