VANUA LEVU, Fiji (15 Aug 2000) -- Armed natives seized a tourist resort on the island of Vanua Levu demanding payments from the hotel owner. The occupation of the Buca Bay resort follows the seizure of several other tourist resorts by indigenous Fijians who have demanded financial compensation over land rights issues. Many of Fiji's resorts and dive centers are owned by foreigners and some have been the target of hostilities in the wave of ethnic violence against non-indigenous Fijians that has spread across Fiji. The latest incident raises concerns that military crackdowns and the government's "Spirit of Fiji" campaign, which targets lawlessness and violence, may not be enough to pacify angry natives in Fiji particularly in Vanua Levu where locals killed a soldier and a policeman and have terrorized Indo-Fijians. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK |
