SAN PEDRO, Belize (3 Oct 2000) -- Hurricane Keith battered Belize with 115mph winds and heavy rain that caused flooding and millions of dollars of property damage across the country.

Dive tourists trapped at San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and Cay Caulker hunkered down in hotels and shelters as wind gusts up to 125mph tore roofs off buildings and destroyed several homes.

The hurricane has been downgraded to a tropical storm but much of the country is still without eletrical power and telephone service.

Two are confirmed dead and two reported missing in Belize.
