Irian Jaya

IRIAN JAYA, Indonesia (7 Oct 2000) -- At least 30 people are dead after fighting broke out between pro-independence activists and security forces.

The fighting started after police took down separatist flags.  Two pro-independence supporters were killed in the fighting which provoked locals to turn against migrants from other parts of Indonesia.

The fighting was the worst outbreak of violence since June 4 when separatists declared the province the new state of West Papua.

The government has sent in soldiers to restore order but the situation remains tense.
