Totally wrecked on Truk Lagoon

CHUUK, Micronesia (11 Oct 2000) -- You may recall when Truk was about hairy-chested machos with tattoos that read, "I went down to 225ft and lived to talk about it."

Back in the last millenium, you went diving, watched a couple of barrel chested wreckies arm wrestle and then went to bed.

Things are changing in the world's most famous wreck diving destination.

A $10,000,000 renovation on the Chuuk International Airport has made it possible for Continental Micronesia to replace aging 727s with modern 737-800s.

Refurbished hotels on the main island of Moen have added restaurants and live music.  Ethnic restaurants are packed in several locations around the island.

Even more astonishing is the new hyperbaric chamber scheduled to open early next year. In the past, bent divers had to be flown to Guam because Chuuk's recompression chamber was almost never functional. Good news for divers pushing the limits on Truk's deepest wrecks.

In addition to the renowned Thorfinn which has been refitted and the Truk Aggressor, a new liveaboard, Odyssey, has started operating in Truk Lagoon and attracts hard-core techies.

Unarguably, Truk Lagoon offers the best wreck diving in the world. Now it offers a lot more after the diving day is done.
