PAPEETE, French Polynesia (25 December 2000) -- A Hawaiian DC-10 airliner overshot the runway at Tahiti's Faa airport but stopped at the edge of the lagoon.

One passenger was slightly injured as the airplane skidded to the end of the runway in heavy rain and strong winds. The flight from Honolulu was carrying 136 passengers

A similar accident occurred in 1993 when an Air France flight skidded into the lagoon after experiencing engine failure.
