LONDON, UK (27 June 2005) -- Forget culture and checking out the cathedral. Young Britons want sex and booze when they go abroad, an official survey has found. More than a third of travellers aged between 16 and 30 believe holidays are just about enjoyment. Of them, 75 per cent aim to drink to excess in their holiday hotspot, 28 per cent want a one-night stand while eight per cent want drugs. Five per cent want to fight. This figure rose to 20 per cent for tourists from the East of England who said brawling was a 'major part' of their holiday. A thousand 16 to 30-year-olds were interviewed for the Foreign Office study, Project Holiday, which highlights the risks young people take having unprotected sex with a stranger. Twenty-four per cent admitted another risky activity - swimming while drunk. One in three agreed with the statement: 'I usually end up doing stupid things but it doesn't matter because it's all part of enjoying myself. | | Celebrating Christmas abroad: British style The most raucous holidaymakers came from the West Midlands, with 60 per cent wanting to go clubbing compared with a national average of 47 per cent. The most peaceable tourists came from the West Country. The study echoes the image held by many foreigners of the British as lewd, drunken and raucous. |
